20 November 2011 : Big display from the Giants

Alnwick Town Giants U8s...5 Wooler U8s...2 Glendale League U8s THE return fixture between Alnwick and Wooler on Saturday was once again a hard-fought, even game. Alnwick started well, with the midfield of Ethan, Joe and Harvey moving the ball around well. Midway through the first period Harvey scored the first goal of the game with a tremendous shot (1-0). This brought Wooler back to life and they soon equalised with a very good goal from their hard-working centre-forward (1-1). Some tremendous defending from Tyler and Mathew C and good goalkeeping from Harry kept the scores even. After some good play between Cameron and Harvey, the latter scored his second goal but once again Wooler levelled the score just before half-time (2-2). Tyler replaced Harry in goal at half-time and, with Connor and Mathew M tying up the Wooler defence, this allowed Mathew C to score the goal of the game with a mazy run and fine shot into the bottom corner of the Wooler net (3-2). This gave the Alnwick team confidence and the hard-working Cameron got his just rewards, scoring Alnwick’s fourth goal (4-2). Wooler kept going and were awarded a p ...

20 November 2011 : 10-men teams battle on

Longbenton...0 Alnwick Town Juniors...6 Pin Point Recruitment NABC U16 League 4 A REVITALISED Alnwick travelled to Longbenton on Sunday for the sides’ second meeting in three weeks. Town started the brighter of the two teams on a very boggy pitch and deservedly opened the scoring after five minutes when Ryan Elliott slotted the ball past a stranded Longbenton goalkeeper who mis-hit his goal-kick. Alnwick doubled their lead two minutes later after man-of-the-match Aiden Hughes ran onto a well-timed Tom Farr through-ball, beat two Longbenton defenders and then chipped the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper from inside the area. On 25 minutes, Alnwick scored a third after Hughes’ cross was headed into an empty goal by Elliott after good play on the left wing. On the half-hour mark Sam Proudlock scored a fourth for Alnwick, volleying home through a crowded penalty area from a Town corner. The referee reduced both teams to 10 men just before the interval for violent conduct at an off-the-ball incident. On 70 minutes, Elliott added Town’s fifth of the game and completed his hat-trick after firing into the top co ...

20 November 2011 : Season’s second defeat

Alnwick Town Juniors...1 Berwick Juniors...3 Pin Point Recruitment NABC U12 League 2 THE lads were beaten by a strong Berwick team for the second time this season. Alnwick started brightly enough with Ben seeing his shot come back off the post within the first 10 minutes. But then Berwick started to compose themselves cancelling out everything Alnwick threw at them.A good save from Moffat kept the score 0-0. Berwick kept pushing and the Alnwick defence of Sam, Reece, Brandon and Ant had no answer as Berwick scored. The lads re-grouped and it paid off, a great move saw Ben latch on to Kieron Hedley’s cross and Harvey’s pressure in the box was rewarded with a goal to make it 1-1. Berwick were awarded a penalty early in the second half, keeper Moffat guessed the right way, but had no chance. Once again the lads had to re-group with Tombo, Kieron, Max, Alfie and Billy working hard in midfield. Alnwick made a couple of changes and brought on Hazza, Cam, Liam, Craig and Will to try and push for the equaliser, but were caught on the counter-attack as Berwick made it 3-1. In truth this game was one to forget for the A ...

20 November 2011 : Town move up the league

Bedlington Juniors...1 Alnwick Town...8 Pin Point Recruitment NABC U11 League 2 ALNWICK moved up to second place with this comprehensive win despite fielding a much-changed team against the league’s bottom side. Alnwick fell behind when keeper Jay Graham strayed off his line and was lobbed from 20 yards by an alert attacker from Bedlington. Bedlington’s lead did not last for long, however, as less than two minutes later, Raph McCall cut in from the right wing and surged towards the Bedlington penalty area before being brought down by no less than four players converging on him. From Liam Cravagan’s beautifully-flighted free kick, Jack Elliott crashed the ball home to level the game. Alnwick hit their stride now and soon took the lead. After some tight passing between Leon McHale, Cravagan and debutant Josef Laverty, McHale struck a fine goal from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom left-hand corner. Within seconds of a save from a Bedlington opening, Alnwick were 3-1 ahead. A good goal-kick from Graham came to McHale, lurking in the old-fashioned inside right position. He took on and beat three B ...

15 November 2011 : Poor trip to the coast

Coast Soccer U9...4 Alnwick Town Cobras U9...1 NMSL U9 COBRAS travelled to Coast Soccer on Sunday without J McNickle due to illness. The home side started well and went in front from a goalmouth scramble (1-0). Cobras attacked and were awarded a penalty when M McKinley was brought down in the box. A Smith stepped up for the penalty but the keeper saved it. Coast Soccer were starting to take control of the game as Cobras seemed half asleep. But a break saw McKinley slot the ball past the keeper to level the score (1-1). Coast Soccer made it 2-1 with another defensive error. Cobras had to lift their game if they were going to take something from it. But it was Coast Soccer who got the third, from yet more bad marking (3-1). The home side got the fourth from a goal-keeping error. Cobras’ performance was poor, with no commitment, passing and bad defending. Managers K Smith and D Middleton said J McNickle was a big miss in defence but said one man didn’t make a team. They said this was Cobras’ worst team performance of the season and the players needed to realise you don’t just turn up to win games, ...

09 November 2011 : Vipers take their chances to grab victory

Alnwick Vipers...5 Rothbury...0 Glendale League, U10 THE final 0-5 scoreline did little credit to a Rothbury side who competed with a strong Alnwick side on a far more equal level than the score suggests. Rothbury could only call on eight of their 16-man squad for this friendly match, which was the fourth time these two sides had met this season. However, the two teams agreed to play eight-a-side for the duration which meant that no Rothbury players had to spend time on the touchline for a game played in very chilly conditions. Such was the high wind-chill factor from a wind that cut across the Alnwick pitch throughout this match, that it was appropriate the Rothbury were caught cold by a strong Alnwick start to this match. Alnwick’s first goal came inside the game’s first five minutes and was a complete fluke. The ball was played low into the Rothbury box and an advancing Alnwick player was unable to correct his run to meet the ball, however, despite stumbling over the intended pass, his trip inadvertently redirected the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the Rothbury net. Rothbury seemed shocked by this ...

08 November 2011 : Morpeth SC Lisbon 3 Alnwick Town Juniors 2 (Pin Point League Cup)

Morpeth SC Lisbon 3 Alnwick Town Juniors 2 (Pin Point League Cup) Alnwick Town U16's travelled to Craik Park on Sunday to take on local rivals Morpeth in what was to be an entertaining league cup encounter. Morpeth started the first half the livelier of two teams and broke the deadlock after 10 minutes when a low shot from the edge of the area looking to be going wide of the post hit off an Alnwick defender and into the corner of the goal. Alnwick soon got back into the game and were rewarded with their efforts after 15 minutes when a inswinging Alnwick corner was met at the back post by Freddie Hall who powerfully headed past the Morpeth goalkeeper into the roof of the net. Morpeth regained the lead on the half hour after some good play down down the left wing, a deep cross into the Alnwick area and a well timed header at the back post. Alnwick were unlucky not to level the game before half time when Luke Mayhew found himself through on goal but shot narrowly wide. Deep into first half injury time Morpeth scored a third after a good through ball behind the Alnwick defence was slotted home from close range. After half time Alnwic ...

Cobras started to pass the ball well and this resulted in J McEwan getting the fifth. R Graham was starting to make some good runs from mid field and this paid off when he got his sixth. Another own goal made it 7-0. Bedlington were still battling well and were awarded a penalty from which they scored 7-1. Back came the Cobras to score the best goal of the game, McNickle played Atkinson down the right who beat two players and crossed to McKeneley to volley home to make it 8-1. 31 October 2011 : Seven heaven

Alnwick Town U12s...7 Ashington...1 CAM got the lads off to a great start on Sunday with a fine header from Billy’s corner after only seven minutes. Both teams went close and Kieron in goal had to pull off a couple of good saves. But Alnwick increased their lead through Harvey with a fierce shot. It could have been more with Will and Craig going close but the lads went into half-time 3-0 up as a great cross (or was it shot) from Cam found Billy who made no mistake from close range. Ashington pulled a goal back after the interval but Reece, Max, Ant and Liam were in no mood to let them back in the game and there were soon more chances being made as Billy had a great run at goal and Kieron H came close with a shot. Tombo, Harry and Brandon came on for Will, Cam and Reece and it was Brandon who scored his first goal for Alnwick Town to make it 4-1. His first-time left-footer from Ant’s inch-perfect pass beat the keeper. Harvey realised there were goals to be had after hitting the crossbar and he went on to take his tally to four for the day with two cool finishes either side of a penalty. That rounded off a great ...

31 October 2011 : Under 16s enjoy there first win

Under 16's Pin Point Recruitment Division 4 Alnwick Town 3 Longbenton 2 Alnwick Town Under 16's recorded their first league win of the season against a physical Longbenton side at Greensfield on Sunday. The home side, kicking with the wind dominated the play from the beginning and were unfortunate not to take the lead after 5 minutes when a Sam Proudlock corner was powerfully headed against the bar by Keegan Watson. Alnwick continued to press the play and deservably took the lead after 10 minutes when a long throw into the box by Tom Farr was not dealt with by the Longbenton defence and Cameron McEwan was on hand with a composed finish from 6 yards. The home side doubled their lead after 20 minutes when a powerful long range effort from Farr was parried by the Longbenton goalkeeper, with Sam Lawless being the quickest to react and poke the ball home. At this point Alnwick were looking comfortable, Farr and Proudlock continued to work tiredlessly in the centre of midfield breaking up the play and creating opportunities which the black and whites were unable to convert. Just before half time in superb style Lawless grabbed his sec ...
