20 February 2012 : Alnwick Town 0 v 1 Esh Winning

Alnwick fell to their 5th defeat on the bounce at home to promotion chasing Esh Winning. In a game with a heated start, Esh were reduced to 10 men after Richards kicked Cockburn in the head with less than 10 minutes played. Tackles continued to fly in, and it took the referee a while to regain control of the game. Despite going down to 10 men, Esh were the dominant side, and it it wasn't for Brooks in goal for Alnwick then the scoreline could have been a lot more. Megran gave Esh the lead just before half time, keeping a cool head to round a couple of defenders and then the keeper to give them a 0-1 lead at half time. 2nd half Brooks again produced some fantastic saves, but the home side couldn't convert at the other end. Catlow with a low drive going inches wide, Keenan forcing a flying save from the Esh keeper, and Whillis going agonisingly close at the death. Alnwick piled players forward at the end but couldn't get the decisive goal. Esh always looked dangerous on the counter attack. Those that were at the game could see how much effort the lads had put in, with many simply collapsing to the ground at the end of the game. ...

11 February 2012 : Alnwick Town 1 v 2 Killingworth YPC Sporting (with Video Highlights)

Alnwick fell to defeat in the Senior Benevolent Bowl at home to Killingworth YPC Sporting. With the score 0v0 at half time, Killingworth could count themselves unlucky not to be ahead going into the break. The away side did take a deserved lead around the hour mark, a long ball headed down and hit on the half volley into the bottom corner by the striker. Alnwick responded, getting into the game for the first time, and got their equaliser through a long range effort by captain Bryan Murray. The goal pushed Alnwick on, creating more chances, but in the process left more gaps at the back. Killingworth's winner did come with a bit of fortune, taking a big deflection of the unlucky Gary Patterson. Although the home side pushed for a winner, they couldn't find it, however Killingworth deserved their place in the semi-final of the cup. 28 January 2012 : West Allotment Celtic 3 v 2 Alnwick Town

Alnwick conceded very late into 7 minutes of stoppage time to suffer defeat away at West Allotment Celtic. Alnwick took a 0-2 lead thanks to 2 goals from Jon Colley, and although Celtic pulled a goal back before half time to make it 1-2, they were still comfortable at this stage. 2nd half Celtic equalised, and the game then went end to end, Iredale hitting the post for Alnwick, and Brooks making a couple of important saves to keep the game level. A draw looked on the cards until additional stoppage time was found from somewhere, and Celtic grabbed a late winner to deny Alnwick a point from the game. Great effort from the lads who deserved to come away with something from the game, Hopefully they can get the events from today out of their system and look forward to the Benelovent Bowl quarter final against Killingworth next weeked. ...

24 January 2012 : Alnwick Town 1 v 2 Ryton & Crawcrook Albion

Alnwick Town fell to their second defeat in four days as they lost 2-1 to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion on Tuesday night, writes James Willoughby.   The Northumbrians were undone by two goals in 10 first-half minutes, which ultimately proved decisive. While Jon Colley gave the St James’ Park side a lifeline with a tap-in from close range at the start of the second half, the black ’n’ whites could not find that all-important equaliser. The scoreline was harsh on Alnwick who played well, with some nice passing moves and decent spells of possession. But for all their endeavour, Town struggled to carve out many clear-cut opportunities and a lack of bite in the final third restricted them to half-chances and shots from distance on too many occasions. Alnwick did have their moments though – moments which could have changed the game’s complexion. Had Dan Iredale’s stunning shot hit the net instead of fizzing agonisingly wide, Alnwick would have grabbed a quick-fire leveller having trailed 1-0. Had an Alnwick player managed to make contact with the ball after it was flicked across goal in the ...

21 January 2012 : Saturday 21st January Results

A bad day at the office for all 3 of Alnwick's senior sides.   Hebburn Town 4 v 1 Alnwick Town FOUR first-half Hebburn Town goals sunk Alnwick Town on Saturday, as the Northumbrians surrendered their three-match unbeaten run. A Ben Keenan goal on the hour proved nothing more than a consolation for the visiting St James’ Park side, after they endured a miserable opening 45 minutes. The defeat was Alnwick’s first of 2012, following a successful start to the New Year, which had brought a victory over Easington Colliery and draws at Crook Town and North Shields. But the visitors, who had to shuffle their pack prior to kick-off because of player unavailability, found themselves up against it almost immediately. With only four minutes on the clock, Hebburn went in front when tall centre-half Daniel Kirkup headed in from a corner. It was a poor start for Alnwick who were looking to avenge a 5-0 home thumping against Hebburn in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Things went from bad to worse soon after when Alnwick, who were kicking against the strong breeze, went further behind after 20 minutes. Keeper Br ...

14 January 2012 : Alnwick Town 2 v 1 Easington Colliery (14.01.2012)

A last-gasp strike from new signing Paul Blakey snatched all three points for Alnwick Town, as they came from behind to beat struggling Easington Colliery 2-1 on Saturday, writes James Willoughby. It capped a fine recovery from the Northumbrians, who stole the points thanks to two goals in the final 12 minutes. Substitute Ben Keenan levelled proceedings before Blakey capped an impressive debut by firing home in the 89th minute. This important victory against the division’s bottom side saw Town maintain their unbeaten start to 2012, extending their run to three games without defeat. And the win – the black ’n’ white’s first since the beginning of December – came in front of watching Northern League chairman Mike Amos, who was carrying out an informal inspection of St James’ Park ahead of Alnwick’s March 31 deadline for meeting the required ground criteria. It was also the perfect way to pay respects to former Town player John (Jackie) Coxford, who passed away recently, aged 83. Both sides held a minute’s silence before kick-off in memory of Jackie – a midfielder who re ...

07 January 2012 : Crook Town 1 v 1 Alnwick Town (plus Reserve and U21 photos and results)

A second-half header from Tony Brown stole a share of the spoils for Alnwick Town as they came from behind to draw at Crook Town on Saturday. The talented midfielder’s effort cancelled out a Gary Patterson own goal after 25 minutes. It was a well-deserved result and restored some Alnwick pride following their painful 5-1 home loss to Crook earlier in the season. The St James’ Park side’s battling away point was also their second in a row, following a draw at high-flying North Shields five days before on Bank Holiday Monday. The match was played in tough conditions, with a strong down-field wind and on a pitch which could only be described as like rice pudding. In the first half, Alnwick were kicking upfield against the gale and Crook took advantage of this – firstly Corey Barnes headed over before a Kevin Devine effort was blocked by visiting keeper Brian Brooks. Alnwick started to come into the game more, with Ben Keenan having a half-chance after 15 minutes, but just losing out to the charging Crook stopper Graeme Pickering. Shortly after, Pickering just managed to push a Neil Catlow free-kick ...

02 January 2012 : North Shields 1 v 1 Alnwick Town (+ link to video highlights)

Ten-man Alnwick Town battled to a well-deserved point at high-flying North Shields on Bank Holiday Monday. The north Northumbrian men had led the contest thanks to a coolly-taken second-half strike from Ben Keenan, who silenced a rather raucous section of the home crowd with his opener. However, a crazy spell towards the end of the match, with Alnwick keeper Brian Brooks being sent off before his replacement Jamie Walton gifted Shields an equaliser, saw the in-form hosts snatch a share of the spoils. But while Alnwick will be disappointed with the way they let their opponents back into the game, they must take great heart from this performance – a performance which saw them recover from a Boxing Day defeat against Morpeth Town to hold a rampant North Shields team who were searching for their sixth league win in seven matches. The home side started brightly and an early corner caused problems, but Brooks managed to push the set-piece up onto the bar before the ball was cleared. Alnwick could have taken the lead when Tony Brown played Luke Newton clear but the latter’s shot hit the post. The two combined shortly afte ...

26 December 2011 : Alnwick Town 0 v 3 Morpeth Town (+ Raffle Prize Results)

There was little festive joy for Alnwick Town as they lost 3-0 to Morpeth Town on Boxing Day. It could have been a different story though, had the St James’ Park side not extended the season of goodwill by gifting their Northumberland neighbours two goals and even scoring another for them. This Christmas cracker of a fixture was always going to be a tough task for an Alnwick side who had lost two of their last three matches – albeit coming into the December 26 encounter on the back of a 2-1 home win over Chester-le-Street. The hosts were also missing captain Bryan Murray, who was serving a one-match suspension – giving Chris Moffett a place in the first team – and welcomed a Morpeth side who have climbed to the higher reaches of Division Two following a slow start to the season and were unbeaten in their last four matches. A good crowd turned out for the festive fixture and the early exchanges were fairly even. The first real chance fell to Alnwick after 24 minutes. Jon Colley charged down a back-pass and attempted a sliding tackle to reach the ball. Morpeth keeper Steven Mundy missed the ball only for ...

09 December 2011 : Cullercoats 1 v 3 Alnwick Town Reserves

ALNWICK Town Reserves went to first-division Cullercoats in the third round of the Minor Cup with high hopes of causing an upset against higher opposition. This game was going to be a game of two halves, with a very strong wind blowing down the pitch, and Alnwick, playing with the wind in the first half, had most of the early pressure without troubling the home keeper. Cullercoats looked dangerous on the break, but Alnwick scored when a Jordan Trotter corner was bundled in by Colin Bickerton (0-1). Cullercoats then came back at Alnwick with Henry Woodcock pulling off a couple of great saves to keep their noses in front. Alnwick doubled their lead when Chris Moffat curled a shot into the top corner from 25 yards out (0-2). The second half was going to be tougher, with the home team having the wind advantage. They soon used it to their advantage when they scored with a rocket of a free-kick giving Woodcock no chance (1-2). Alnwick were not letting the wind affect their game and they were playing neat, attractive football on the deck and creating chances. Brad Mclelland rattled the crossbar when put clear and Alan Stephenson sco ...

30 November 2011 : Darlington RA 4 v 0 Alnwick Town

ALNWICK Town slumped to a second defeat in five days last night, losing 4-0 to league high-fliers Darlington RA. The County Durham side move up to third in the STL Northern League Division Two table while Alnwick must reflect on only 4 points from a possible 27 going back to the start of October. The away side did manage to hold their own and keep the scores level until the hour mark but goals from Stephen Allison, James Evison, Michael Barnett and a penalty from Graeme Whitehead sealed the three points for Darlo. Alnwick will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host struggling Chester-le-Street, who sit five places below Town in the league and have only won twice away from home this season. ...

26 November 2011 : Northallerton Town 3 v 0 Alnwick Town

ALNWICK travelled to Northallerton on Saturday with high hopes of continuing to buck the trend of recent defeats. Last week’s 3-1 victory over Whickham had broken their run of six league games without a win. And the side should have been confident after a strong performance with a new style of fast, on-the-turf play, which saw a first league win for Town’s new management team. But the bright start to the season where Alnwick blasted out of the blocks to the top of the table may seem a little distant now. And this tie away at the North Yorkshire side, currently sitting six places above the St James’ Park outfit, proved too much and they slumped to a 3-0 defeat. Northallerton had two strikes from Carl Chillingsworth sandwiching a Dan Clayton finish to thank for their three points, while Alnwick need to move on and look to bounce back. The game opened with sustained pressure from a lively home side and it was seven minutes before Alnwick’s first attack, a cross by Paul Hodge, which was fumbled by the home keeper. Neil Catlaw headed clear on the 10th minute and Alnwick appeared to have contained the home s ...

20 November 2011 : Visitors keep their top spot

Pin Point Recruitment Northern Alliance round-up Premier Division HEATON Stannington must have feared the worst when Seaton Delaval were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time with the score deadlocked at 1-1, writes Jon Tait. The normally dependable Grant Kershaw stepped up and placed the ball on the spot, took a quick glance at the keeper and decided to go for power. He jogged up and was left with his head in his hands as he blazed it over the bar, preserving the visitors’ top spot. Kevin Carr had shot them ahead early in the game but Delaval had levelled through debutant Matthew Wade and had it not been for a couple of outstanding saves by the Heaton goalkeeper, they would have been trailing before the unlucky Kershaw’s spot-kick miss. Carlisle City’s Ashley Pattinson levelled Paul Collinson’s early opener right on half time and the Sky Blues went on to score a winner through Martin Coulthard in the 68th minute that moves them up into second spot with a game in hand. Rutherford’s Andy Reay fired in the only goal of the game against Shankhouse from eight yards in the 65th minute and althou ...

20 November 2011 : Colliers edge derby game

Alnwick Town U21...3 Shilbottle CW...4 Bilclough Cup Round One SHILBOTTLE made hard work of edging past their Second Division opponents in this derby. The Colliers opened brightly enough and took the lead after 15 minutes. A good run down the right by Andy Metcalf saw his cut-back cross thumped into the top corner of the net by Phil Grey from the edge of the box. However, Alnwick hit back within a couple of minutes when a drive from Peter Murray found the bottom corner. Phil Grey struck a post as the Colliers fought back but the interval arrived with the scores level. Following the restart, the home side quickly moved ahead. Another fine strike from Peter Murray put them in front and when Danny Donohoe struck home a free-kick on the hour mark, they were firmly in the driving seat. The Colliers finally came to life and almost got back into the game when Alan Wallace struck the cross bar and James Jackson had a strong header blocked on the line. They did pull back a goal on 65 minutes when an Andy Metcalf free kick found James Jackson who shot home to give the Colliers a lifeline. It was all Shilbottle at this stage and t ...

On Tuesday, Ashington came from being two goals down to South Shields to draw 2-2. The visitors went two gaols ahead through Stephen Ramsey and Matthew Soulsby. 15 November 2011 : New team at Town helm

A NEW managerial team has been appointed at Alnwick Town, with ambitions of bringing a new brand of football to the club, consolidating its Northern League status. Bosses at the Northern League Division Two outfit have named Danny Olson as manager and Rob Marshall as his assistant following the resignation of Dougie McEwan and Stephen Gibbard last month. The pair, who bring with them a wealth of experience, took control of their first game on Saturday – a 1-1 draw at Whitehaven. And 45-year-old Olson, from Whitley Bay, admitted the pair are relishing the challenge. “We couldn’t turn this opportunity down and we are looking forward to getting our teeth into it,” he said. “This club is steeped in history and the main thing is that all the lads are from the Alnwick area. It is their club. “There is no budget as such but they are going out every week playing for their club and that was a big attraction. These kids want to play for Alnwick Town and there is a real family feel about the club.” The pair take over following a difficult period for Alnwick’s senior side – managerl ...

15 November 2011 : Battling draw stops the rot in manager’s first game

Whitehaven...1 Alnwick Town...1 STL Northern League, Division Two ALNWICK Town’s new manager paid tribute to his side’s ‘massive effort’ after seeing them end a four-game losing run with a battling away draw with 10-men. The brave St James’ Park side ground out a point at Whitehaven after fighting for most of the game with a man down following Tom Vickers’ first-half dismissal. And boss Danny Olson, who was taking charge of his first game – as was his assistant Rob Marshall – was delighted with his side’s commitment to the cause, but was left to rue the red card. He said: “I was pleased with the attitude and the response of the players. “If we had kept 11 players we would have won. We were looking comfortable. “But we played for a long period of time with 10-men and the lads’ attitude was fantastic. “It was a massive effort all round and no one shirked responsibility.” Things had started well for Alnwick, who took the lead after 13 minutes – Kris Willis’ terrific high-dipping shot from outside the area beating the keeper ...

04 November 2011 : Brandon give Town double trouble

Alnwick Town...0 Brandon United...2 STL Northern League, Division Two ALNWICK Town’s miserable run of form continued as they lost 2-0 to Brandon United on Saturday. A second-half double from Brandon’s Mark Brischuk condemned Alnwick to their fourth defeat on the bounce, which included a cup loss against Brandon on Thursday night. Despite the rot, Alnwick started brightly on Saturday and dominated the first half. Tom MacPherson’s header went just past the post early on before David Davison’s shot went over minutes later. Visiting keeper Andrew Wilkinson then saved well from Bryan Murray. Brandon’s only real effort of the first period was a header from Conor Winter after 40 minutes which went wide. The hosts had the first chance of the second half, when, five minutes after the interval, Paul Hodge rifled a shot from the edge of the area but his effort was palmed away, just, by Wilkinson. But Alnwick would pay the price for not converting one of their many chances into a goal. With 58 minutes on the clock, Brandon broke the deadlock. Darlington RA have appealed to local fans to come along, and support them as they enjoy their best season for several years. The RA have been one of the surprise packages of Division Two this season. They finished sixth from bottom last term, but with the addition of some new players, they're challenging at the other end of the table in the new campaign, and today they have a chance of some FA Vase glory against fellow second tier outfit Gillford Park. Secretary Chris Griffin said: "With Darlington being away today in the Conference, then we're hoping that some of their fans will come along and watch us instead. We're having our best season for five years. We've struggled in recent years, but now we’re playing some really good football, and we're winning games. There are lots of local lads in the team, who have proved that they can play at this standard of football. Players like Phil Pentony, Steve Cheeseman and Mike Barnett have done well for us. Our management team of Nick Harrison and Jamie Smith have also learned a lot from their first season, and now they've put together a very good team, which is capable of challen ...

31 October 2011 : Unbeaten away record finally goes

Seaham Red Star...4 Alnwick Town...2 STL Northern League, Division Two ALNWICK Town finally surrendered their unbeaten away record as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at lowly Seaham Red Star, writes James Willoughby. The loss was Alnwick’s first on the road all term – ironically against a side who had not won at home this season, until Alnwick came to town. It could have been different though, if the St James’ Park side had taken advantage of an early lead. And they will be kicking themselves for not taking something out of this contest, after they created a number of chances against a Seaham side who had only won two league matches this season before hosting Alnwick. But it wasn’t to be and three Red Star goals in the second half – including two in as many minutes – helped sink Alnwick and condemn them to their third league defeat on the bounce, following home losses to Team Northumbria and Birtley Town. A NFA Senior Benevolent Bowl cup win against Ponteland United was sandwiched between those two St James’ Park defeats though. Alnwick started brightly against Red Star and took the le ...
