Alnwick Finish Season With Style
Alnwick eased to 3 points on Saturday, and in the process secured a very respectable 50 points for the season.
The visitors started the day relegated to the Wearside League at the expense of Easington, but news filtered through during the day that Celtic Nation (relegated from the 1st Division) had resigned from the league and folded. This in turn, gave Brandon a reprieve, and they will remain in the Northern League next season.
Alnwick dominate the majority of the game from start to finish. A change in formation, along with some change in tactics appeared to boost the home side.
The deadlock was broken by Adam Shanks, who grabbed his 27th league goal of the season direct from a freekick.
The home side soon doubled their lead. A mazy run from Gloire Mbiavanga resulted in Tony Brown taking the ball and smashing home from 18 yards.
Both sides hit the woodwork, Brandon from range against the crossbar, and Kieran Egen for Alnwick against the post.
Egen was not to be denied though. A Kieran Hogg cross clattered off the underside of the bar, and Egen was there to bundle home his 2nd goal for the club, and gave Alnwick a 3 goal lead at half time.
The 2nd half should have resulted in further goals for Alnwick, but the score only increased by one. Tony Brown's cross was headed home by Egen for his 2nd of the game.
A comfortable victory in the end, but in a way the day belonged to Brandon, who we will see again next season.
