Alnwick Town 3 - 3 Birtley Town
Alnwick Town blew a 3 goal lead after dominating large parts of Saturday's tie against Birtley Town.
First half goals from McClelland and Baker put Alnwick in a commanding position. The only negative of the first half was not scoring more goals, with chances either missed or well saved by the visiting keeper.
2nd half and Alnwick extended their lead to 3 with a McClelland header.
Birtley got back into the game with a goal from distance against the run of play. This spurred the away side on, and Alnwick appeared to take their foot off the gas.
A handball in the box by Straughan allowed Birtley to pull back to 3-2 from the penalty spot, and then a deep cross was finished at the back post to bring the score level at 3-3.
It was a day of missed chances for the home side, who will be very disappointed to lose a 3 goal lead, espcially at home against a side who had not picked up a point away from home this season.
Manager Jon Egen said, "We played maybe our best football of the season in the 1st half, however we yet again lost our structure in possession and defensive principles were poor in the final 25 minutes of the game, but we will work hard in training this week and keep looking to create a 90 minute performance. Josh Willis back in defensive midfield has made a big difference and Brad McClelland looked sharp after 3 weeks out."
