Ryan Douglas came back into the starting 11 following suspension, with Josh Hay and Tom Macpherson being named on the bench. Dan Thompson was also available following his return to the club, and was also named amongst the substitutes.

In a match sponsored by Lycetts Financial Services, it was a night of flowing football from the home side, and the deadlock was broken with 10 minutes on the clock. Lewis Coyle found space out wide to swing in a cross for Stephen Young, who directed his header beyond the keeper to give Alnwick an early lead (1-0).

Winger Chris Laidlaw almost made it 2 following a ball across the box from Young, but it was just out of his reach.

The home side were playing some brilliant football, and a deserved 2nd followed in the 23rd minute. Ryan Douglas, starting in centre midfield, sprayed a long diagonal ball to Lewis Coyle. The youngster dribbled past a defender, played a one-two with Young to break into the box, and slotted into the bottom corner. A brilliant goal (2-0).

Bedlington rarely threatened, with goalkeeper Todd being kept busy only by crosses and corners into the box. Striker Foalle for the away side would be booked for dissent following a foul on Hogg. At half time, Alnwick were 2-0 and looking very comfortable.

In the 2nd half, Alnwick started a little deeper, inviting pressure and looking to hit the away side on the counter attack. Coyle went closest for Alnwick with a header just over the bar in the 55th minute, but the defeat for Bedlington was pretty much assured 5 minutes later.

Following a tussle around the halfway line with Straughan, striker Foalle (booked in the first half) fell to the ground with the defender. Standing up in front of the referee, Foalle kicked out at Straughan. Inexcusable, and the red card was a formality. He may well face further action depending on a referee’s report for dissent whilst leaving the pitch.

Ryan Douglas came close to scoring a cracker in the 63rd minute. Finding space around 25 yards out, he left fly with his left foot only to see it go agonisingly wide of the post. Almost game, set and match.

70 minutes and with Alnwick looking to finish off an increasingly agitated away side, a free kick was awarded around 30 yards out near the side line. Kieran Hogg whipped the ball in, only to see if bounce in the penalty area and into the corner leaving the keeper no chance. 3-0 and no way back for the away side. Although substitute Dan Thompson made a late claim for the goal after the game, the dubious goals panel went in favour of Hogg.

Coyle, Lowes D and Jackson all saw late chances, and Bedlington tried in vain for a consolation with long range efforts, but Alnwick would settle for a very impressive 3-0 win against their local rivals.
