Thornaby 2 v 2 Alnwick Town

August 27, 2017

Josh Hay has found the scoring touch again for Alnwick Town, and scored a brace as Alnwick secured a 3rd consecutive draw, this time away at Thornaby to remain unbeaten in 4 games.

Thornaby 2-2 Alnwick Town
Howes K (16)   Hay (49, 76)
Chapman D (65)

Twice Alnwick came from behind, never giving up, and can consider themselves unlucky not to have claimed all 3 points with some of the chances created throughout the game.

On a hot and sunny day down in Teesside, the hosts took a deserved lead in the 16th minute. Kurtis Howes was first to react after Todd had saved, but could only parry the effort back into the 6 yard box to the feet of the Thornaby striker (1-0).

A hamstring injury to Jake Lowes brought Lewis Robson into the game in the 1st half, but Alnwick struggled to find any rhythm going forward. Ian Todd in goal pulled off a couple of good one on one saves to keep Alnwick in the game.

Tom Macpherson would come closest for the away side in 1st half stoppage time. Corner was whipped in, and from around 6 yards out Macpherson connected almost too perfectly, his header crashing off the bar and away. Half time, and a Richie Mitchell teamtalk required.

And it worked. 49 minutes in, Alnwick awarded a freekick around the corner of the penalty area. Ryan Douglas lofted the ball to the far post, where Josh Hay would loop a header back across the goal and over the Thornaby keeper (1-1).

Alnwick were starting to get back into the game a bit more, but it was stretched, and Thornaby would regain the lead in the 65th minute. Daniel Chapman placing the ball into the bottom corner (2-1).

Lewis Coyle almost got Alnwick back into the game. As Thornaby appealed for offside against Young, Coyle broke away under pressure from the full back. His shot was brilliantly saved with the fingertips of the Thornaby stopper and onto the post. The keeper was surprised to see his save not given recognition by the officials who awarded a goalkick.

The introduction of Dan Thompson for Lewis Coyle in the 70th minute swung the game back in Alnwick's favour. The fresh legs of Thompson caused the Thornaby right back problems, and he was brought down just outside the box. Lewis Robson's freekick was bundled towards goal, only for the Thornaby keeper to keep it out, but as the ball rolled slowly in the 6 yard box, Josh Hay was first to react to smash the ball in (2-2).

Both teams huffed and puffed for a winner, but for the 3rd game in a row, Alnwick settled for a point. Two difficult trips in recent days returning 2-2 draws.
