The Great Escape theme tune is starting to play quietly in the background, as Alnwick Town secured another vital 3 points away at Ryton & Crawcrook Albion on Wednesday night.

Ryton & Crawcrook Albion 0-2 Alnwick Town

    Douglas R (70m)

You have to go back over a year for the last time that Alnwick Town won 2 games on the bounce. December 2016 to be exact. With a stat like that it is little wonder that we have been struggling at the wrong end of the table, but the recent turn around in fortunes have given the club a massive chance of beating the drop this season.

Alnwick came into the game on Wednesday night having not played a game in almost a month due to the recent poor weather conditions. Other results hadn't gone Alnwick's way in recent days, with a win for Darlington RA and a point for Brandon United.

2 changes were made to the Alnwick starting lineup. Starting places for Scott Brotherick and Ryan Douglas, with Peter Scott and Tony Brown missing due to work commitments. Josh Hay and Lewis Robson would also return to the bench.

Conditions weren't great. Wet and windy throughout the night made it difficult for both sides to play football, but Alnwick would again do well causing problems down the wings courtesy of Laviers and Bright.

1st half Alnwick kicked with the wind, and the early pressure was there with a succession of corners causing problems with the wind. The best opening chance fell to Phil Bright who was brilliantly denied by Houghton in the Ryton goal with an effort that looked to be heading for the top corner.

Ryton would have their own chances from corners, and Alnwick would scramble clear on a coupe of occasions, but Hodgson wasn't tested.

Bright wouldn't be denied for long though, another through ball fell to the winger who drilled a shot low and hard into the bottom corner. No chance Houghton, and the away side took the lead in the 18th minute. (0-1)

The wind continued to cause issues and both sides struggle to create clear openings. Ryan Douglas would have Alnwick's last chance of the half but he fired over. HT 0-1.

2nd half and Ryton with the wind would try and early effort which floated harmlessly wie, and at the other end Darren Riddell's effort was easily claimed by the keeper.

As tackles began to fly in, Jake Lowes was cautioned, and the referee would find himself stop starting the game on a regular basis.

Ryan Douglas tried his luck from distance with a freekick, but the keeper just recovered in time after slipping whilst diving.

Douglas though would double Alnwick's lead in the 70th minute. After working their way into the box, Douglas cut onto his left foot and smashed an effort into the top corner, celebrrating infront of the visiting fans. 2 goals up and surely no way back for the home side.

Bright almost made certain when played through 1 on 1, but some excellent defending from Ryton recovered before he could get his short away.

Ryton almost pulled one back from distance with the wind, but saw their effort go agonisingly wide of the far post.

Laviers would have Alnwick's final effort. His well struck effort fizzed wide of the post.

In the end a comfortable victory in difficult conditions which moves Alnwick to within 2 points of 3rd bottom. A win away at Blyth AFC on Saturday could see the club move up to 4th bottom.
