Percy Pick Up 3 Points

August 19, 2018

Alnwick Town fell to their first defeat of the season, courtesy of a freak goal after 16 seconds from Jonathon Storey.

Alnwick Town 0 - 1 Percy Main Amateurs
    Storey J (1m)

On a blustery day at St James' Park, Alnwick Town suffered defeat in the 1st home game of the season. From the kick off, Percy Main played a couple of passes, with the long ball played forward to Jonathon Storey. he attempted to lob the ball over keeper Callum Brooks, and with a massive helping hand from mother nature, the ball bounced on the line and into the net. 1-0 to the visitors with only 16 seconds on the clock. On another day the ball would sail harmlessly over, but the striker took a chance in the conditions and they paid off.

The goal appeared to set the tone for the home side for the day, who lacked the same confidence they had shown in the opening 2 victories on the road at North Shields Athletic and Gateshead A.

Percy created the better chances in the opening 45, almost doubling their lead on 14 minutes but their effort went narrowly wide.

0-1 at half time, and Alnwick did come out better. Ramsey had a volley go wide a minute after the interval, and Quinn went close from distance, but Backhouse wasn't being troubled in the away goal.

Many stoppages in play from away players going down, and substitutions from both sides did little to improve the game. Brendam Balmbra, along with youngsters Max Clark and Joe Pickard both had solid games at the back, with Pickard making a vital late interception to keep Alnwick in the game.

It would take until injury time for Alnwick to come close. Ross Moore was cynically brought down just outside the box resulting in a yellow card for the Percy defender. Jonathyn Quinn stepped up, only to see his goal bound effort be tipped onto the crossbar away for a corner. A brilliant save from Backhouse and his only real save to make in the game.

The resulting corner was cleared, and Percy Main Amateurs claimed their first 3 points of the season. A disappointing result for the home side, but you can't win every game, and the lads have the chance to put things right on Wednesday night at home to Gateshead Rutherford AFC. Kick off is 7:30pm at St James' Park.
